Asbestos Victim's Family Wins £57,500
The family of a man who died of an asbestos-related disease has secured a settlement of £57,500.
John Scott, who was 76 when he died of mesothelioma, had worked as a foreman and electrician for the Atomic Energy Authority for almost forty years until he retired in 1993.
Mr Scott was put at risk almost every day at work as asbestos dust was present in the air around him. Asbestos was used on the lagging of pipe work and in other areas of the plant. His employer failed to provide any protection to prevent the inhalation of asbestos fibres.
After bringing a claim against Mr Scott’s former employer, his family secured a settlement of £57,500 in compensation.
Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of lung cancer for which there is no cure. It is caused by exposure to asbestos. The disease has a long latency period, so the symptoms often only become apparent many years after the original exposure.
